End Litter.
We like clean communities.
We work with our volunteers and community affiliates to pick up and prevent litter through cleanup efforts and education programs. We donate trailers to aid sheriff’s departments with litter cleanup programs. Our current campaign, “Be Beautiful, Keep Your Community Clean and Green” and “Be Beautiful, Keep Our Waterways Litter-Free”, includes billboards with Lamar Advertising, social media, and broadcast messaging with SuperTalk Mississippi throughout the state of Mississippi.
More than 51 billion pieces of litter land on U.S. roadways each year, according to Keep America Beautiful.
Did you know?
Research and experience shows litter is the result of individual behavior. Once litter is on the ground, it only attracts more. A clean community discourages littering. Cleaning it up costs $11.5 million a year in America.
Studies show it also decreases property values by 7 percent. But the good news... you can make a difference. We all have a role to play in preventing litter. It takes just one person, school, business or organization to make a positive impact.
Programs and Resources
People in Mississippi gather together each year for the Great American Cleanup, a nationwide clean sweep organized by Keep America Beautiful. This event is the largest community improvement event in the country, reaching 20,000 communities each year, including many in Mississippi.Affiliates, community groups, state agencies and many others in Mississippi participate each year.
Keep Mississippi Beautiful partners each year with Mississippi Department of Transportation to hold the Trash Bash, during which MDOT employees across the state volunteer to pick up litter along the state's highways.
Cigarette Litter: Through Keep America Beautiful's Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, Keep Mississippi Beautiful is working to reduce littering of cigarette butts, which accounts for more than a third of all roadside litter.
